After discovering I was pregnant last August, I naively thought that not much would change in my daily life until I was ‘really’ pregnant (except the obvious dietary restrictions). I would soon discover just how wrong I was! Now at 8 months, I’ve decided to reflect on the ups and downs of gardening while pregnant, and to share my learning curve in the hopes it might help to prepare, motivate and ultimately reassure other people on this crazy journey.

June 2020
We started this month riding on the high of an unusually warm spring, and with all of the vigorous growth that brings. Since then, June has seen deluges and thunderstorms, and more recently soaring temperatures in the early thirties! And yet while I have at times struggled with the whiplash of this month's extremes, the… Continue reading June 2020

It feels like a while since I first wrote my plan for growing extra vegetables in our garden this year, and already I can see it starting to come together. The first 3 planters have been in the garden for a while now, and a second set of 3 will be finished today. Liners between… Continue reading March 2019

Just after Christmas and the New Year in the depths of cold January, summer and the homegrown vegetables it brings feel like forever away. But now is actually the perfect time to start planning and preparing the ground for growing, especially if you’re starting from scratch, or like me expanding the range of crops and… Continue reading January 2019
September 2018
As the start of meteorological autumn, September heralds the beginning of the new season in all its golden glory, and as soon as my birthday is over (3rd September), I can’t help but start planning for Christmas! (However early that may seem…) But, looking out into my garden, the seasons seem to have a different… Continue reading September 2018

We’re finally tucking into courgettes from the garden, I haven’t bought carrots since June, and I have more beetroots than I really know what to do with! There are also little cucumbers and tomatoes finally forming on the plants, and as our chilli seeds didn’t sprout in the end, we bought a couple of chilli… Continue reading August 2018

It feels like such a long time since I wrote my last update, even though it’s only been a month! But what a month – with hot weather, a homemade irrigation system, our first taste of garden carrots and beetroots, and a delicious summary recipe to enjoy them too! If you’re just here for the… Continue reading July 2018

I can’t believe I’m writing my June update already – where did May go? One of the longer months of the year has shot past, and the veg has shot up! The carrots and beetroots are looking really bushy and healthy, and well on track for harvesting next month, maybe even this month – I… Continue reading June 2018
May 2018
At the end of a busy Bank Holiday weekend, I just wanted to share a quick update from the garden, because I can’t believe we’re already harvesting and eating our home-grown produce in May! The recent rain and sun weather combo has probably helped a lot, but I didn’t expect to be eating from our… Continue reading May 2018
April 2018
We love eating lots of fresh veg and salad, so this year we’re growing our own. As you can imagine, I’m very excited. Having grown up in a village where having a vegetable patch is the norm, I was determined that I would do this myself when I left home – it’s just on a… Continue reading April 2018
